Due to unforeseen circumstances, the 2012 SGHS annual meeting will not be held in Ft. Myers, Florida. Our home base will be the historic hotel, The Jefferson, in downtown Richmond. After our business meeting and lectures on Friday afternoon we will depart the Jefferson and travel 9 blocks to tour the Executive Mansion, which is the oldest governor's mansion in continuous use in the country. The evening will be spent at Maymont. We will tour the house and gardens and proceed to the beautiful nature center for dinner. Saturday's lectures will be held in the elegant ballroom of the Jefferson. At the conclusion of the afternoon lectures we will proceed to historic Hollywood Cemetery for tours. Our evening's festivities, including strolls in the garden and dinner, will be held at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Sunday's optional tour is still in the making, but we will definitely have lunch at Tuckahoe the boyhood home of Thomas Jefferson. Please stay tuned for more information.
Southern Garden History Society Scholarships
The Society offers scholarships to attend the annual meeting to bona fide students enrolled in college and university majors relevant to the mission and goals of the society. Previous recipients are ineligible except that students may apply for scholarships once while an undergraduate and once while pursuing a graduate degree. Normally only one scholarship is awarded per annual meeting. The scholarship provides a waiver of registration fees plus $500 to assist with travel and lodging. Applications, consisting of a letter from the student stating his/her course of study, interest, and career objectives and a letter of recommendation from the student's advisor certifying the student is enrolled in a degree granting program, should be sent to the society President (dnorton@mountvernon.org) no later than March 1.
An annual meeting is held each spring in a different location in the South for the purposes of studying the garden and landscape history of that area, creating further interest in garden history and restoration in the area, and stimulating interchange of information and ideas among members.
